During the first year of training, each fellow will identify a scholarship oversight committee (SOC). Fellows may seek research opportunities across the entire university they are not restricted to investigators in the Section or Department.  Annually, fellows present their research activities to all members of the section (Research in Progress). Fellows also present their ongoing research at the annual departmental research fair.

Purpose of the SOC

  • To provide formalized mentorship for the Adult Infectious Disease fellows.
  • To facilitate fellows to complete at least one research project yielding publication or presentation.
  • To aid fellows in career development

 

Makeup of the SOC

  • At least three faculty members (need not be a physician)
  • One faculty member from a section other than Adult Infectious Disease, per the fellow’s career or research goals. Examples include transplant physician/surgeon, antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist, and pediatric infectious disease physician.
  • At least one faculty should be the primary research mentor, and at least one should be a career mentor.

 

Schedule of meetings

  • Fellows should meet with the Program Director or Associate Program Director within the first 3-6 months of the first year to determine the participants of their Committee.
  • The first committee meeting should be scheduled no later than the late fall of the fellow’s first year.
  • After the first meeting, the Committee and fellow should meet no less frequently than every three months, preferably in person.
  • Meetings should include a brief presentation from the fellow on research progress, followed bby feedback and planning of next step.
  • Fellow presentations of research in progress will be open to the Section for attendance; however, the final presentation at the end of the second year should be during a formal rounds to the entire Section.
